The analytical operations cover:
- chemical analytics
- material characterization
- mineralogy
- product analytics
In addition the research center offers accredited emission measurements on site. We have a highly trained staff in analytical services as well as modern instruments. Approximately 80 % of analyses are made to Outotec's internal clients and 20 % to external clients.
The laboratory analyzes mostly element and compound contents of metallurgical samples. Samples are usually either solids or solutions. Chemical analyses are based on calorimetric, titrimetric, gravimetric and electrochemical methods. .
The most important analyzers are:
- Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer
- Atomic absorption spectrometer
- Ion chromatography
- Combustion analyzers (oxygen/nitrogen, sulphur/carbon)
- Mercury analyzer
- Total organic carbon analyzer
Samples are examined in the laboratory in order to identify different compounds of the sample and to determine their composition.
The most important analyzers are:
- Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA)
- Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
- Optical microscope and image analysis
- X-ray diffractometer (XRD)
The laboratory is focused to analyze the composition of metals and their impurity levels. Most important metals are copper and copper alloys. Measurements are made direct from the metal sample and if needed homogenization melting ís made.
Most important analyzers are as follows:
- Optical emission spectrometer with spark excitation (S-OES)
- High resolution mass spectrometer (ICP-HRMS)
- X-Ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF)
- ICP-Optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES)
- Combustion analyzer (Oxygen/Nitrogen and Hydrogen)
