Preheating of ilmenite results in significant energy savings and increased unit capacities for production of titania slag and synthetic rutile (SR). Outotec provides technology for preheating under reducing or oxidising conditions using circulating fluidised bed (CFB) or flash technology.
Outotec has developed a technology for roasting of ilmenite under reducing or oxidising conditions using CFB technology. Roasting changes the magnetic properties of the ilmenite and allows the removal of chromite by magnetic separtation. Oxidising roasting at temperatures above 950°C is required for primary ilmenites prior to further processing to SR.
The combination of ilmenite preheating with charring of coal and the subsequent feeding of the hot material into the reduction kiln offers a significant unit capacity increase for existing or new Becher SR plants.
