With increasing energy prices, due, in part, to ever-shrinking common traditional resources, fossil fuel alternatives such as oil shale or oil sand have suddenly deserved a second look in terms of what they can offer for the future. Outotec now offers value-adding technologies and services to the energy industry with a view to renewable resources. After decades of providing expertise and innovation to the mining and metallurgical industries, Outotec realized that its capabilities, technologies and proprietary equipment, could be expanded to include the energy sector. Our offerings include unconventional oil winning, coal charring/gasification and combustion technologies for various plants, such as oil shale pyrolysis or biomass combustion.
In March 2009 Outotec launched a joint venture with Eesti Energia, based in Estonia, to develop and market sustainable, energy-efficient and economically viable oil shale processing methods. Since July we have begun providing basic engineering and test work for a plant producing oil from Estonian oil shale.
In addition, Outotec and the Swedish company Skellefteå Kraft AB have also established a joint company, GreenExergy AB, which focuses on developing, marketing and delivering technologies for bio-energy power plants to produce bio-energy from forestry and sawmill residues.
Outotec maximizes energy efficiency in all of its processes that operate at elevated temperatures by utilizing the off-gas heat generated in other plant areas as an energy source. This reduces the carbon dioxide emissions of plants using Outotec technology.
