Direct reduction
Considerable efforts have been undertaken to develop new technologies for steel making via the electric arc furnace as an alternative to the classic blast furnace. The aim of process development has been to avoid the need for expensive coke making, and reduce capital and operating costs as well as the impact on the environment. All our direct reduction processes remove the oxygen from the iron ores in the solid state and produce direct reduced iron (DRI) or hot briquetted iron (HBI) for direct feed into electric arc furnaces.

Smelt reduction
An other alternative route to the blast furnace pig iron production is the smelting reduction of iron ore fines. The HIsmelt process smelts iron ore and coal in a water cooled refractory lined vertical vessel to produce hot metal suitable as feed to BOF’s and EAF’s.
