Laboratory Magnetic Separators

Hans Christian Oersted, who discovered that a magnetized needle was affected by the action of an electric current, established the link between magnetic and electric forces in 1820. In 1825, Sturgeon invented the first electromagnet, which possessed greater lifting strength than conventional permanent magnets. The discovery of lodestone's magnetic power in the 1860's furthered the search for stronger permanent magnets. Almost 100 years later the original rare-earth magnet was created. With quick advancements in technology, the first rare-earth magnetic separator was developed by Bo Arvidson PhD and his team at Bateman in South Africa. In May of 1982, his first unit was put in commercial operation.

Super conductive wire has led to the manufacture of superconducting magnetic coils. By placing specially constructed coils in liquid helium, extraordinarily high magnetic field strengths are achieved due to near absence of electrical resistance. Beginning in the early 1990's, Outokumpu, now known as Outotec, went to great lengths to achieve a thorough understanding of the basic principles for traditional and high gradient magnetic separation.

Our experience in magnetic separation led to improved high-field separators and the application of superconducting magnets to many areas of mineral separation that had not previously been possible using conventional magnetic separators.

Separation based on magnetic susceptibility of particles is accomplished by our wet or dry, low or high intensity, or superconducting magnetic separators. An expanded range of laboratory, pilot-scale, and industrial magnetic separators is now available to meet your separation needs.
